PhD Research Projects 2012

Conference and Exhibition Opening

PhD Research Projects 2012 is the sixth annual conference and exhibition related to doctoral research at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. The event is open to the public and involves presentations by students undertaking the MPhil/PhD Architectural Design, MPhil/PhD Architectural History & Theory or the MPhil/PhD programme at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Its purpose is to encourage productive discussions between presenters, exhibitors, staff, students, critics and the audience.

Leading to a PhD in Architecture, the two Bartlett School of Architecture doctoral programmes encourage originality, creativity and coherence. Over 60 students are currently enrolled and the range of research subjects undertaken is broad. However, each annual PhD conference and exhibition focuses on a smaller selection of presentations from students who are starting, developing or concluding their research. The conference papers are organised thematically while this year’s exhibition considers the relations between doctoral research and architectural design.

Organised and curated by Dr Penelope Haralambidou, Professor Jonathan Hill, Dr Barbara Penner and Dr Willem de Bruijn, PhD Research Projects 2012 has five invited critics: Professor John Aiken, Slade School of Fine Art; Professor Philip Beesley, University of Waterloo; Dr Maarten Delbeke, University of Leiden; Professor Murray Fraser, Bartlett School of Architecture; and Dr Sophia Psarra, Bartlett School of Graduate Studies. Presenting this year are Ricardo Agarez, Alessandro Ayuso, Fiona Curran, Catja de Haas, Popi Iacovou, Guan Lee, Brent Pilkey, Pilar Sanchez, Ben Sweeting and Anna Tchernakova.

The catalogue is edited and designed by Dr Willem de Bruijn of Atelier Domino. PhD Research Projects 2012 is supported by the Bartlett School of Architecture and the UCL Graduate School Skills Development Programme.
