This scheme is intended for academics from overseas who wish to spend a period of time at UCL, normally not less than four weeks and not more than one calendar year, pursuing their own research, either individually or in association with members of UCL staff in related fields of interest. The following notes give details of conditions and facilities associated with the scheme.
Eligibility for Acceptance
Affiliate Academics accepted by UCL are persons normally holding established academic posts overseas in institutions of higher education, or occasionally in industry or business. Their admission to UCL is based upon an application to pursue their work in a particular field of research in one of UCL’s departments, with collaboration and consultation with members of the department, as appropriate.
All applicants to the Bartlett School of Architecture whose first language is not English must be able to provide evidence that their spoken and written command of the English language is adequate to enable them to integrate socially while visiting UCL. The required evidence may take the form of either substantial education or work experience conducted in English or a recently obtained acceptable English language qualification or test result.
Procedures and Records
Application is made to the School of Architecture, either directly to a member of staff within the department who will act as the host and to the relevant administrator. The Affiliate Academic will be asked to complete an application form and return this, along with a copy of an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae and a statement of their proposed research.
Once the Head of Department has in consultation with the Director of Architectural Research approved the visit, the request will be passed to UCL Human Resources who will write formally to the applicant to invite him/her to visit UCL as an Affiliate Academic. The Affiliate Academic to the School of Architecture will have borrowing rights to UCL libraries, a UCL ID card, an IT account and the use of a small office space on a ‘hot desk’ basis. Since car parking space at UCL is very limited, parking spaces are unavailable.
All Affiliate Academics within the Bartlett School of Architecture will be expected to make a seminar presentation to staff and students during their visit.
Fees and expenses
Affiliate Academics are charged a pro rata fee. For 2011/12 this fee was £4,000 (for a twelve month visit) and is likely to increase. Invoice for payment will be issued shortly after arrival.
What to do next
Contact the member of Bartlett School of Architecture staff you wish to act as your host (http://www.bartlett.ucl.ac.uk/planning/people/people.htm#academic) and email the Human Resources Senior Administrator, Stoll Michael (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your request. Please note, the Bartlett School of Architecture accepts two Affiliate Academics in each academic year. Applications are considered twice a year and the next meeting to consider applications will take place in June 2012. The closing date for applications is Thursday, 31 May 2012.
