M Arch (Architectural Design) AVATAR
Advanced Virtual And Technological Architecture Research

Previous work from students on this course in very recent years, an academic and research mission statement and recent publications/research outputs are visible at the AVATAR website.

The Masters studio in architectural design, directed by Professor Neil Spiller is a 12-month full-time programme concentrating on advanced design. It directly encourages the individual to discover his or her individual expression. There is continuous discussion of work via tutorials and reviews. The first three months introduce students to the theoretical concepts, which underpin AVATAR through lectures and initial design projects. Students then confirm the subject of their thesis project and report and work in specialist teaching groups.

The new architecture coming out of the Bartlett is characterised by a very high level of invention and creativity. The school is internationally known as a centre for innovative design. Many prizes and awards are now being received by Bartlett graduates, the recently published yearly catalogues and books should be consulted in order to get the general flavour of the work.

As part of University College London, the school is directly networked into innumerable territories of art, science, technology and computing and is augmented by the many visitors who come as critics, or to hold seminars or lectures. The programme is designed for both recent graduates and for qualified architects: people who wish t be part of a more speculative design environment. In its first fifteen years the programme has attracted students from more than 25 different countries, many of who have been on major scholarships and awards.

The M Arch is open to graduates who hold a Diploma or similar proof of completion of the normal professional award in architecture. Successful performance is awarded the degree of M Arch (Architectural Design) in the University of London. Please note that this programme does not offer exemption from UK professional examinations.
