2001 - 2002: House for a Superstar

Design proposals influenced by circumstances of culture,
landscape and environment.
'Thousands of Viewers Daily - Outdoor sells' - Billboard on
the I-395
Looking through the widescreen of your car at cinemascope
billboards everything seems familiar yet unknown. You speed
by panoramic vistas and suddenly feel adrift in space.
Leaving Los Angeles you travel out and up to the desert, past
the glitter of lights to enter the galaxy of stars.
"If L.A. is space, the Mojave is truly outer space."
The Future ahead, the Past reflected in the rear view mirror.
Boneyards of 747's, Graveyards of Cadillacs, Next Exit the
Neon Playground.
In the Artificial Kingdom of Las Vegas visitors take daily
tours of Luxor, Grecians serve cocktails, muzacs piped out
to the pool of Paradise Ranch.
It has been observed that LA is a city of illusion "anything
may turn out to be anything else, and there is no way of knowing
because nothing has a shape of its own...."
Are you in a thatched Tahitian hut or in the South Seas, Disneyland
or in a restaurant on La Cienega? Perhaps actually in the
Chiropractor's waiting room, the pineapple sale at Safeway's
or the House of a Superstar.
This year the unit will concentrate on work based in the Mojave
and surrounding area. After all out in the Desert you can
hear your hair grow and your breath gets taken away.
