2013: Outdoor[s in] London

Bartlett School of Architecture Summer School 2013

In 2013 the Bartlett School of Architecture’s annual Summer School will be held from Monday 5 August until Friday 16 August. Each year we expect to accommodate a group of up to 80 participants of varying ages and differing backgrounds, including prospective university students, international students, secondary school students (applicants must be 16 years of age or over) and those who are simply keen to develop their interest in architecture and the Bartlett School.

Outdoor[s in] London

A visit to London in 1970 would have found a fraction of the number of occupied outdoor spaces in comparison to today. Britain now boasts a culture of outdoor cafes, public spaces designed for outdoor events, temporary theatres and pleasure gardens.

In 2013 the Bartlett School of Architecture’s annual Summer School will explore the outdoor life of London with participants recording what they find and developing architectural responses.

Proposals may be small interventions or larger projects. Using the Bartlett’s excellent workshop and studios and University College London’s associated facilities we will stage a practical symposium to survey, speculate and construct.

The Summer School will be held in London from Monday 5th August until Friday 16th August. Each year we expect to accommodate a group of up to 80 participants of varying ages and differing backgrounds, including prospective university students, international students, secondary school students and those who are simply keen to develop their interest in architecture and the Bartlett School.

Participants can expect to produce a range of work including drawings, models and large scale installations. Students will work in groups, and individually under the instruction of the Bartlett’s teaching staff.

Previous years have produced boats, bridges, shadow puppet theatres, as well as a range of projects at multiple scales.

The cost of this course is £680

2012: Metroland

London’s population is currently around 7,500,000 and is growing. It is currently the most populous municipality in the European Union.

New housing is required to accommodate the population, airports and railways
are needed to move around. Previous attempts to deal with growth have included garden cities, suburban overspill estates and very high density housing projects.

In 2012 the Bartlett School of Architecture’s annual Summer School will tour the inner city and suburbs of London exploring these areas surroundings recording
what they find and developing architectural responses.

Proposals may be small interventions or larger projects. Using the Bartlett’s excellent workshop and studios and University College London’s associated facilities we will stage a practical symposium to survey, speculate and construct.
