Architecture Computing Cluster
Location: 2nd floor Wates House

The architecture computing cluster is an open access facility available for use by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled on the BSc, Diploma, MArch and MSc urban design programmes. (Those on other programmes have separate facilities).

Equipped primarily with Macintosh computers, but with a smaller number of PC's, the cluster provides you with access to a range of digital media including CAD, desktop publishing, and audio-visual applications, in addition to e-mail and internet capabilities. The cluster can be used at all times when there is access to the building. However you are expected to treat the facilities properly. You must not remove equipment from the room including furniture and you are expected to maintain a clean and tidy environment. Those leaving the facilities in an untidy state may be forbidden from using them in future. Fines are levied for the return of items normally resident in the cluster room.

New Users
If you are new to the Bartlett, and even if you have extensive computing experience, it is important that you undertake a short 'passport course' to introduce you to the equipment and protocols of the network. Please DO NOT use the cluster until you have taken this course. Courses commence at the beginning of term and can be arranged using a sign up sheet outside Room 229.

Getting Help
With the exception of the 2nd year computing course ENVS2222, all support and teaching within the cluster is on an informal basis. Staff are on hand at specific times to help you with queries regarding hardware and software. Inevitably, at busy times of the year, staff resources can be stretched to the limit and it is not always possible to provide you with instant assistance. Please try and arrange tutorials in advance wherever possible. Where a number of students are interested in a specific application small classes are arranged for group teaching. Keep an eye out for sign up sheets or approach staff to arrange a class. Please be aware that the staff does not necessarily have in depth knowledge of all applications that are used in cluster. As the cluster is open in the evenings it is inevitable that help may not be available when you need it most. Try and plan critical work at times when assistance is available and do not be tempted to disconnect computers and peripherals to solve a problem by yourself - this has caused much damage in the past.

Other UCL facilities
UCL Information Systems Department (ISD) also maintains several clusters which are equipped mainly with PCs and are located elsewhere in various buildings and libraries throughout UCL. Please see following chapter.

Staff
Yusah Hamuth (Room 226) manages the entire Bartlett-wide computing facility, of which the architecture cluster is only a part. This is a demanding task undertaken across several campus sites. However, where time allows Yusah can assist with general technical queries and in some instances software problems.

Jean Garrett (Room 229) provides a range of informal classes (including passports) and individual tutorials on a first-come first served basis. Please arrange a tutorial in advance wherever possible, as Jean is part-time. Jean's experience is primarily in desktop publishing and audio-visual applications.

Bill Hodgson teaches ENVS2222 Computing and the Built Environment taken by all 2nd years. He is not normally available for other students.

Printing
The cluster contains an A3 colour printer and a plotter for larger drawings up to A0. To use these you will have to purchase a copy card from the Facilities Officer in Room 132. Please seek assistance if you are printing for the first time. You must provide your own media for the plotter.

Software
The following is a list of some of the more significant applications normally available within the cluster, and the platform on which they operate.
CAD: Microstation, AutoCad mechanical desktop, FormZ.
DTP: Quark Xpress, In Design, Photoshop , Office/Word
Video/animation: Final Cut Pro, Director, Premiere
Web: Flash/Dreamweaver

Computing Regulations
If you wish to make use of any college computing facility, including the architecture cluster, then your actions must comply with UCL's Computing Regulations. These cover the use of all computing services and facilities within UCL.

Please be aware that these regulations are not limited to solely to UCL hardware but includes work undertaken on any computer, including your own, if it is connected to a UCL communications network.
You are reminded particularly that the use of pirate/unlicensed software, or the attempted installation of UCL software held under educational licence onto private computers is illegal. The regulations may be viewed in full at www.ucl.ac.uk/UCL-Info/Policy/Computing/Use/. As a student using the facility you are bound by these conditions and your use of the facilities implies knowledge of them. A further copy of the regulations is displayed in the cluster space. Please ask the computing staff if you require any clarification.

Viruses
The number of viruses circulating continues to increase at an alarming rate and the introduction of a virus to UCL's computer network can cause extensive damage to the work of thousands of people, and render the facility inoperable for days. Please be responsible in the data that you introduce and access using college facilities, and remember many viruses are introduced through the reading of unsolicited emails and their attachments. If you have any doubt about the integrity of any data or web site then you must consult computing staff. College computing regulations also forbid the deliberate introduction of a virus, or the use of college facilities for hacking.
