The school of Architecture offers students access,
tuition, and equipment to fundamental media facilities, central
to the production and representation of architectural ideas
and methods. Some of these facilities offer open courses;
others such as audio/visual offer specialised equipment for
student projectwork.
The photographic Facility at the Bartlett
is a resource open to all students of Architecture throughout
their course of study at the school.
Current Bartlett students
have utilised photography, not just as a means of factual
documentation, but also as a creative tool in the design process
- from understanding and applying the fundamental principal
of the Camera Obscura, through to colour 'photograms, and
the analysing and recording of material properties under polarised
light.
The facility includes two
photographic darkrooms equipped with four diffuser enlargers,
35mm to 5" x 4" large format, for both colour negative
and black and white printing. The photographic studio is equipped
with tungsten lighting, camera supports and a copystand for
the photography of two and three-dimensional work.
Induction classes are initially given to provide
students with the necessary darkroom knowledge for black and
white film processing and negative printing. Additional classes
and assistance are provided for colour and RA-4 negative printing.
Photographic tuition and instruction relating to students
project work or particular requirements are available throughout
the academic year.

The A-V facility provides for teaching events
and public lectures, exhibitions etc., but of equal importance
is the aim to help students create still and time-based images
and audio recordings for their portfolios, ranging from a
simple video surves of a site, to a studio-based shoot of
a complex model or stop-go puppet animation. A wide range
of equipment is available for loan, including low and high-end
video cameras, digital stills cameras, data-projectors, traditional
slide-projectors, a variety of tripods, and a fully-equipped
non-linear editing suite. Instruction for students, where
required, is also available.

The architecture computing cluster is an open
access facility available for use by undergraduate and graduate
students enrolled on the BSc., Diploma, MArch and MSc urban
design courses. (Those on other routes have separate facilities).
Equipped primarily with Macintosh computers, but with a smaller
number of PC's, the cluster provides you with access to a
range of digital media including CAD, desktop publishing,
and audio-visual applications, in addition to e-mail and internet
capabilities. The cluster can be used at all times when there
is access to the building.
With the exception of the 2nd year computing course ENVS2222,
all support and teaching within the cluster is on an informal
basis. Staff are on hand at specific times to help with queries
regarding hardware and software. Where a number of students
are interested in a specific application small classes are
arranged for group teaching.
