The Bartlett School of Architecture's research develops from its position as the top-rated Architecture and Built Environment research submission to the UK 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in which it gained the highest percentage of 'world leading' (4*) outputs.
Situated within UCL, our research culture reflects the University's Grand Challenges in Sustainable Cities, Global Health, Intercultural Interaction and Human Wellbeing. Our diverse architectural design, history and theory, and technology research activities engage with these research agendas through multi-scaled, transdisciplinary, experimental, site-specific and critical approaches, advancing fields such as: sustainable architectural ecologies, urbanism and living urban environments, the poetics and politics of representation, advanced technologies and fabrication, and digital processes and cultures.
Our lively research environment generates outputs through individual and collaborative research with UCL colleagues and international and national partners, such as universities, professional and industrial organisations, media and public engagement institutions. Working across the fields of design, history and theory and technology, our outputs include buildings, landscape and urban proposals, conceptual designs, prototypes, exhibitions, installations, competition entries, authored and edited books, and refereed articles and chapters.
We attach great value to the ongoing interaction between our research and teaching activities across undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Our research agendas directly inform our vibrant international PhD, MA and MArch communities so that students are a key constituency in the School’s research culture.
