A spirit of collaboration

The Bartlett is the UK’s broadest faculty of the built environment: eight schools and sections, all at the top of their game. Our real strength, though, is one we’re yet to fully discover and exploit: the power of collaboration.

When specialists from different disciplines work together, the potential for new learning and discoveries is unconfined. Our focus is on UCL’s four research Grand Challenges – Sustainable Cities, Intercultural Interaction, Wellbeing and Global Health – and on the questions they raise that lie on the boundaries between conventional disciplines, and which can only be explored through collaboration.

We have a range of programmes in place to promote cross-disciplinary research. Our design and science cultures can interact and innovate together, while preserving the excellence and integrity of each.

The Bartlett Synergy Grants The Bartlett Synergy Grants (previously the Bartlett Research Challenges Small Grants Scheme) has been set up to fund activities that lead to, or support, interdisciplinary research collaborations in the Built Environment that are in line with the general Faculty Research Strategy.

The Bartlett Research Materialisation Grant is an annual £50,000 award to a cross-disciplinary research project with a three-dimensional, tangible outcome such as a model, prototype, exhibition, installation or pavilion. Its aim is to encourage collaborations between staff from at least two schools or sections and, possibly, artists, designers, curators, engineers or other specialists from outside the faculty.

The Bartlett Visiting Research Fellows is a programme to host four visiting post-doctoral researchers for three months at The Bartlett – leading scholars and practitioners who will collaborate with Bartlett staff on subjects related to the chosen theme for that year. Each subject will aim to bring together expertise from at least two of The Bartlett’s eight schools and sections.

The Bartlett Research Exchanges are showcase seminar events that regularly bring together staff from across The Bartlett to hear about and debate current research on a topic that cuts across the traditional boundaries of the faculty’s schools or centres. They’re an opportunity to connect with expertise from other parts of The Bartlett and forge new collaborations that can answer the most challenging research questions.
