Established in 1992 as the first MSc course in Facility Management in England, the course attracts facility professionals with a variety of experience and backgrounds from all levels of management across a variety of sectors, - office, healthcare, retail, education and residential. The benefits to participants are:

  • positive career opportunities such as promotion, increased managerial responsibilities and sector changes
  • increase in salary levels
  • obtain an internationally recognized and accredited academic qualification.

The course has extensive links with professional bodies, building occupiers and facility management suppliers, and draws on the latest developments in expertise and ideas that are leading developments in the FM field. All of this is reinforced by UCL’s central London location.

Course Aims

The MSc/Graduate Diploma in Facility and Environment Management is concerned with the use and performance of buildings and support services over time. Its focus is the effective planning, design, management, maintenance and adaptation of building stock to serve human and organisational needs more appropriately and efficiently. The primary aim of the course is to achieve an integrated understanding of the basic knowledge and operational skills required for the good management of buildings, their environments, facilities and support services.

Course Delivery

The course is delivered through interactive seminars during over two terms, September to December and January to March. Teaching is scheduled from 14.00 - 18.30 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Full-time participants are enrolled on both days. Flexible / modular participants are typically enrolled in the Wednesday sessions in their first year and Thursday sessions in the second year. Examinations take place in Term 3 (April – May) and the MSc research report is submitted in September.

Students have use of the Living Learning Lab in the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies as their base. Teaching delivery sometimes includes live video links with a USA university. A site visit is often provided during the course to enhance the students' experience. Some visits have resulted in case-study publications, such as the Sadler's Wells Theatre and the Greater London Authority building.

Career Opportunities

The majority of FEM graduates from UCL are engaged at a senior level in Facility Management operations, consultancy or design. Some students have used the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. There is clear evidence that the course has helped participants to:

  • improve career prospects
  • extend personal skills and decision making capabilities while continuing to work
  • achieve an internationally recognised qualification that is also accredited by RICS and the BIFM
  • keep ahead of developments in the facility and property management field.

Graduates from the course report career benefits which include:

  • salary increases between 10-100% on completion of the course
  • accelerated promotion, typically 3 to 5 years ahead of previous expectations
  • access to senior position interviews and opportunities
  • mid-career opportunities to change direction or sector
  • professional recognition by employers and clients in the UK and worldwide.

Internship opportunities in various FM companies are sometimes available to our students. For example, one of our students recently won a 6 weeks internship at Morgan Stanley.

Research

Bartlett research into post-occupancy issues of design, construction, use performance and management of complex buildings directly informs the content and delivery of the course. The FEM academic staff members are actively involved in collaborative research projects in the field, working for example on: the refurbishment of occupied buildings; condition assessment and maintenance for buildings; facility risk and opportunity assessment and facility adaptation for change of use - all directly informing the course. The FEM team is part of the Complex Built Environment Systems Group, CBES, an interdisciplinary research group involving many Bartlett specialists, with a multi-million pound turnover in research and consultancy projects.

PhD opportunities are available in the Facility and Environment Management field. PhD research informs the MSc course. Examples of PhD dissertations include:

One of our PhD students, Hermen Van Ree, has been awarded the prestigious “FM Researcher of the Year “at the European FM Awards 2008.
