Research Interests
My projects and texts attempt to bridge the gap between architectural theory and the built environment by expanding the vocabulary of digital architecture. On various platforms - research, education and practice - I endeavour to establish a debate in which experimentation, technology and progress do not exclude emotions, traditions and identity.
The Politics of Digital Poetics
My work on The Politics of Digital Poetics criticises pure parametric and algorithmic ‘virtual’ architecture in favour of a poetic ‘digital’ avant-garde, equally developed through 2D/3D software and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC), Rapid Protoyping (RP), Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies. Venturing into grasping the properties - hitherto less theorised than their counterpart: parameters - of the computer itself and the resulting computer-aided architectural design (CAAD), my projects and texts propose to synthesise (technological) parameters and (poetic) properties, hypothesising the concept of ‘mimetic intraface’ as merger, and the vectorial twoandahalf dimensionality (2&½D) as well threeandahalf dimensionality (3&½D) of CAAD.
Digital Exuberance
I am the guest-editor of an issue of Architectural Design on 'Exuberance', featuring seminal projects and articles by Wolf D. Prix (Coop Himmelb(l)au), Peter Cook (CRAB studio), Kjetil Thorsen (Snohetta), Ali Rahim, Hernan Diaz Alonso (Xefirotarch), Tom Wiscombe (Emergent), Neil Spiller, CJ Lim and many others. The issue not only to celebrate (digital) formal exuberance and sophistication (but it does), but also discusses exuberance in terms of politics, economics and ecology. Bringing forth the new virtuosos, the publication celebrates and considers: the new Baroque period of formal theatricality and digital performance, the almost Neo-Rococo extravagance of furniture design and the lavishness of Middle and Far-Eastern urbanism.
CyberBaroque and other DigiTales
A parallel strand of research is developing the concept of Cyberbaroque, in which I convolute (overlap and blur) functional, structural, technological themes and atmospheric, spatial, cognitive setups: i.e. structure and style. DigiTales - digital narratives about the strange – narrate the other and alien as well as the familiar, the intimate and the contextualised, in order to discern (actually reveal) a whole series of events and haecceities within digitality beyond the usual aspects of techniques, technologies and technics. Does not the convoluted nature of the subject matter go beyond the functions of complexity and intricacy? Does it not invoke something ranking above beauty, elegance and smartness? Does it not evoke the sublime, the blissful and the mysterious…? A major contribution has been published in Nordic Talking: 4 1/2 Years in Studio with Kjetil Thorsen (ed. by Thorsen, Kjetil; Ender, Ursula; Cernusca, Petra) SpringerWienNewYork, 2009.
Convoluted Tectonics
Criticising objectivity as invariance, evolution as method, users as observers, I argue that it is the challenge of this generation of creative thinkers (whatever the discipline) to fully engage with the actuality – rather than the virtuality – of computer-aided architectural design (CAAD). That means that after the initial period of definition and discovery of disembodied virtual realities, data-scapes and cyber-realities, the endeavour now is: synthesis. My main approach towards design, theory and teaching could be summarised by the term Convolution, as it conveys the various notions of blur (pushing the boundaries of the discipline), overlap (layering of contexts, ideas, technologies…) and interference (interdisciplinarity and multitasking). Also, as it is rooted in volution, the tectonic notion of convolution conveys a formal statement of a gyrating, spiralling architecture.
InterPolis
There is hardly an experimental, innovative and contemporary digital urban design approach that is not based on a dogmatic, exclusive teaching methodology that extrapolates geometric singularities into multiplicity and modulation of complexity/language via parametric cohesion. Such an approach is global, and pursues networking, evolution and growth. InterPolis on the other hand promotes an inclusive, non-prescriptive (teaching) design agenda that interpolates urban multiplicity and modulation of complexity/language into singularity via convoluted cohesion. Such an approach is also global, as it pursues identity, involution (involvement) and synthesis.
AC-DC
I am developing an Architectural Curriculum in Deep Computing (AC_DC) for a dynamic, ‘CAADemiurgic’ author that champions an organic bond of research by design in which research does not merely equal programmatic requirements, and in which design does is not simply referred to as form generation. Along these lines, I am conceiving (with S. Küppers) a 3D enhanced Moodle VLE (virtual learning environment) and 3D Model Database intraface to enhance e-learning and allow easy access and evaluation, as well as transfer and archiving of 3D data, constructed for further processing through CAD/CAM manufacturing and render farms.
