Carbon Sequestration: from Forests to Buildings

13:30 - 17:30 26 March 2013

Location: Central House, UCL

Chimney (C) SXC

UCL ISR, in partnership with the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP), hosts this seminar for policymakers on carbon sequestration in the UK.

The UK Government is committed through the Climate Change Act to reduce green house gas emissions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. The targets for reductions in emissions by 2022 are 12MtCO2/year from homes and communities and 1MtCO2/year from work places and jobs.

At present UK policy does not consider carbon sequestration as one of the means of achieving these targets. However, the amount of CO2 sequestered within our buildings is significant.

Based on extrapolations of current trends in timber frame construction, the total annual carbon sequestered within harvested wood products (HWP) in construction
is expected to increase fromabout 8MtCO2 in 2005 to 10MtCO2 in 2020 and 14MtCO2 in 2050.

This event is free to UCL staff/students and ASBP members.
