Refurbishing Wates House

The Bartlett School of Architecture has been located in Wates House since 1975. The building was originally designed to accommodate a faculty of 90 staff and 380 students. Since then The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment has grown considerably and currently supports over 400 staff and 2,100 students. During this same period, The Bartlett School of Architecture has also grown and now has over 130 staff and 800 students teaching and studying on a variety of professionally accredited and non-accredited courses and PhD level research.

In 2012, UCL Estates and The Bartlett embarked on a project to undertake a refurbishment and extension of Wates House to ensure that the School of Architecture continues to provide excellence in teaching and research. Hawkins/Brown were appointed as architects for the project and continue to work in close consultation with the Faculty as the project develops into the detailed design stage.

The refurbished building will feature:

  • Additional floors
  • An expansion to the south side of the building
  • Brand new studios
  • New social and cafe areas
  • A contemporary, dedicated exhibition space
  • Greatly expanded Bartlett workshops

In order to undertake the extensive building work, The Bartlett School of Architecture will be relocated to a large facility to the north of Euston Road in the Summer of 2014 in preparation for the academic year 2014-15. This facility is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the main UCL campus and the School of Architecture will be located here for a period of two years before returning to the new Wates House in academic year 2016-17.

This temporary building will feature:

  • Floor space equivalent to Wates House
  • Exciting and newly refurbished studios with 5m high ceilings
  • A new facility for the school’s digital and analogue workshops

During this period of relocation, UCL and The Bartlett School of Architecture are determined to continue to provide an excellent experience for its students and maintain the levels of support, facilities and high standards associated with The Bartlett School of Architecture.
